The New Fire
The New Fire follows young engineers who are developing next-generation nuclear reactors in an effort to transition our electrical grid off of fossil fuels as quickly as possible to mitigate climate change. These Advanced Reactors are inherently safe and cannot melt down. Unlike existing reactors, Advanced Reactors use coolants that cannot evaporate, such as molten salts. If they overheat they automatically shut themselves off and cool down passively without operator intervention or pumps. Some Advanced Reactors can even use existing stockpiles of spent nuclear waste and use it as fuel. The New Fire casts a fresh new perspective on an energy technology that most people dismiss as unacceptable by arguing that it’s not only less harmful than existing fossil fuel technology but it is the best option to save our planet before it’s too late.
